Certainly a step in the right direction in what could make it hard for the Taliban to infiltrate Afghan celebrations if every corner of every street has a policeman standing there, with troops standing by to take out the taliban.

KABUL, Afghanistan – The Afghan police ordered 7,000 officers onto the streets of Kabul as the top U.S. general in the country warned that militants were planning attacks during Monday’s Independence Day celebrations.

Maj. Gen. Jeffrey J. Schloesser said in a statement released by the military that there was “credible intelligence” showing militants planned to attack civilian, military and government targets. Soon after the warning, a suicide car bomber detonated a vehicle laden with explosives outside a U.S. base in the eastern province of Khost, according to Khost Gov. Arsallah Jamal.

The blast killed nine Afghan laborers waiting to get inside the base and wounded 13 others, he said. A second attacker tried to ram police officers investigating the first blast, but was shot dead by officers, Jamal said. In Kabul, the increased police presence is a response to signs of the Taliban’s growing strength near the capital.
