Former South Carolina Mayor Arrested for Embezzlement

GASTON, SC (IMNS)  – The former mayor of Gaston, Larry Sharpe, who resides at 3668 Fish Hatchery Rd, Gaston, SC, has been arrested.  He was taken into custody and processed in Lexington County, SC for misconduct while in office and other charges.  Sharpe was arrested following a South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) investigation into Gaston’s Finances.  Prior to his leaving office for, “medical reasons”, Sharpe had dismantled the Police Department due to the towns financial problems.  Shortly after leaving it was determined that the former mayor spent large sums of Gadson’s money for personal reasons..

GASTON, SC (WIS) – The mayor of Gaston has told WIS News 10 that he is stepping down because of some previous heart problems, at the recommendation of his cardiologist.

His announcement comes the same day that SLED agents took a computer from town hall and the IRS seized two town bank accounts as part of their separate investigations.

Earlier this month, Mayor Larry Sharpe and council members decided to lay off the police force because the town is close to $300,000 in debt. WIS News 10 obtained documents showing questionable spending and reimbursement, including a $6,500 bill for a conference in Hilton Head for four people.
