How Ottawa could’ve helped name the presidential pup
By Glen McGregor, The Ottawa CitizenFebruary 27, 2009 U.S. president Barack Obama should have asked for dog name suggestions when he visited Ottawa last week.
The president’s family has reportedly settled on a Portuguese water dog as their choice of breed for a new family pet, but is struggling with a name for the dog, which they hope to bring home in April.
“Frank” and “Moose” have already been rejected, according Obama’s wife, Michelle.
“Oh, the names are really bad. I don’t even want to mention it, because there are names floating around and they’re bad,” she told People magazine.
About 100 Ottawa dog owners have already settled on original names for their Portuguese water dogs, according to dog license records obtained by the Citizen from the city. All but 10 of the animals have unique handles, the records show.
