Is the Economy that Scary? Halloween sales are Up!

FAYETTEVILLE – Buying a Halloween costume can get expensive. The average cost of an adult costume is around $40, and kid’s costumes aren’t much cheaper.

In such a scary economy, you wouldn’t expect people to be spending that kind of money, especially for one night. But Dave Mendelsohn, the owner of Spirit Halloween in Fayetteville, says his sales are even higher than last year.

So what is it about Halloween that’s making people spend?

“It’s a night of escape, you know uh, even if things are going rough, it’s just a night to have a little fun and put on a different mask and be someone else, so everybody likes that, I mean, you can always find money for that,” said Mendelsohn.

Sarah Sullivan says her entire family is dressing up, and their front yard is filled with Halloween decor. She says it’ll take a lot more than a weak economy to keep them from celebrating.

“Everybody loves Halloween. No matter you know if we have to go without for a little while, we’re going to spend the money for Halloween,” says Sullivan.
