Pro-Life Democrats Confirm they will Kill Health Care Bill Over Abortion Funding
More than a dozen pro-life Democrats could decide the fate of the Senate health care bill that contains massive abortion funding and other pro-abortion problems. They are led by Michigan Rep. Bart Stupak, who confirmed again this morning that they are prepared to kill the health care bill over abortion.
Stupak and the approximately 12 other pro-life Democrats gave House Speaker Nancy Pelosi the narrow margin she needed to pass the House health care bill.
Stupak says the Senate bill has language that would allow the government to “directly subsidize abortions.”
“You would find in there the federal government would directly subsidize abortions, plus every enrollee in the Office of Personnel management plan, every enrollee has to pay a minimum of $1 per month toward reproductive rights which includes abortion,” he explained.
“Give us our language. Let’s keep current law: No public funding for abortion,” Stupak said.
There is no confirmed list of the Democrats who are supporting Stupak’s effort to stand up to the health care bill over abortion funding, but the general consensus is they include Republican Rep. Anh Cao of Louisiana, the only Republican to vote for the House version of the bill, Stupak himself, and the following Democrats:
Jerry Costello (D-IL), Kathy Dahlkemper (D-PA), Joe Donnelly (D-IN), Steve Dreihaus (D-OH), Brad Ellsworth (D-IN), Marcy Kaptur (D-OH), Dale Kildee (D-MI), Dan Lipinski (D-IL), Jim Oberstar (D-MN), and Charlie Wilson (D-OH)
