COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – A Richland County Sheriff’s Deputy has been wounded in a shooting off Laredo Drive near Broad River Road and I-20.
That’s near Columbia High School.
Richland County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Lt. Chris Cowan tells WIS News 10 both the deputy and a suspect were shot.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott confirmed the suspect in the shooting was killed.
Authorities say the suspect fired shots from the bedroom of the home. The suspect fired the first shot, and more than one deputy returned fire, killing him.
Richland County Coroner Gary Watts identified the shooting victim as 34-year-old Larry Darnell Bosket.
The deputy, Marcus Brown, who has ten years with the department, was apparently shot through the arm, and we’re told he is expected to be OK.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said he believes Brown acted appropriately in returning fire after he was shot.
Sheriff Lott said, “After getting shot, you should return fire and he eliminated a threat that was shooting at him. He was hit, our officer was hit first. The first shot was fired by the suspect, our officer was hit, he returned fire.”
Neighbors say they heard about ten shots being fired. The incident occurred at about 10:30am.
The sheriff’s department was executing a search warrant for drugs when the shooting took place. Authorities say drugs were visible throughout the house. Two other people were in the home at the time and they have been taken in for questioning.
The sheriff’s department says they could face drug charges later.
