JERUSALEM (CNN) — The driver of a backhoe was shot and killed after he drove the construction machine over a number of vehicles near the Jerusalem hotel where Barack Obama is scheduled to stay Tuesday night, according to police.
The backhoe used in the attack sits behind a car Tuesday in downtown Jerusalem.
The construction vehicle struck several other vehicles, including a bus, before the driver was shot and killed by an Israeli border policeman and a civilian, a government statement said.
One person was “moderately to seriously wounded” and four others sustained minor injuries in Tuesday’s attack, the statement said, citing Jerusalem’s police chief.
The statement immediately labeled the incident a terrorist attack.
A witness said he saw the machine overturn two cars near the hotel in downtown Jerusalem, where the U.S. presidential candidate will be staying after he arrives in Israel. Obama is in Jordan at the moment.
The incident comes three weeks after a similar attack in Jerusalem in which a Palestinian construction worker rammed a front-end loader into a string of vehicles, killing at least three people before Israeli police shot and killed him.
