CNN has recently made it clear that they do not want internet political commentators to utilize their live stream of the upcoming presidential debate. In a communication sent to content creators on platforms like Youtube and Twitch, CNN warned against using their content to provide commentary on the debate. It is worth noting that CNN will be the sole channel airing the first presidential debate, while subsequent broadcasts will be shared among other major national television networks.
Political current affairs podcaster Tim Pool revealed this information on Monday, stating that his team received a warning from CNN regarding the use of their content for debate commentary. CNN’s message, made public by Pool, explicitly stated that they only grant digital platforms the right to broadcast the debate through CNN’s official YouTube channel, not on individual channels.
Pool further explained that CNN had a telephone meeting with him, facilitated by YouTube. Following these discussions, YouTube sources informed Pool that CNN expressed concerns about the content that could be generated on the platform surrounding the presidential debate.
CNN claims that their request is primarily related to image rights. In the previous presidential election, Fox also attempted to take legal action against those who used their live broadcast to comment on the debate on internet platforms, but eventually dropped the legal battle.
Tim Pool strongly believes that CNN’s true intention is to control the narrative and prevent anyone from challenging it. He argues that restricting communicators like himself from providing live monitoring of the debate with commentary and fact-checking is an attack on the fundamental principles of civic and democratic participation.
In a video on his channel, Pool emphasized the importance of civic responsibility and participation in presidential debates, stating that he will continue to provide live commentary and fact-checking.’
