Consumers Reap Benefits of Gas Price War

One of the benefits of living in the South Eastern United States is a low cost of living including Prices at the Pump.  While many consumers in Northern and Western States are paying in excess of $4.30 at the Pump, South Carolinians are paying a mere $ 3.74 per gallon.  For our Metric readers 1 Gallon  = 3.79 Liters.  Recently, in high traffic areas in Columbia, the Capital City of South Carolina, some gas stations are in Price wars to gain customer support. With in a 10 mile area one can find Regular Gasoline selling for $3.74 to $4.01.

A WIS -TV  first provided the following story to South Carolina Readers

One corridor in Columbia is playing host to a fight Don King would be jealous about.

It’s a gas war – a four-way battle to have some of the cheapest gas in the city.

In one corner, City Gas and Sunoco with gas at $3.73 a gallon.

According to one gas customer, that price is “the cheapest around town to me.”

But in the other corner is Raceway, with gas at $3.72 a gallon. For another gas customer, it’s the cheapest he’s seen.

Not so fast, according to Murphy USA Gas in the other corner. With gas at $3.71 and a three cent discount with a Wal-Mart card, the station has some of the cheapest gas in Columbia.

Game, set and match, but the hysteria over cheap gas in the area is so bad that a person was out conducting traffic.

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — People lined up to fill up their cars, trucks, boats, even gas cans, all because Tuesday morning at the Marathon station on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Buford, it was $3.79 a gallon when Channel 2 arrived.

“I’m about four miles away, so it’s worth it to come here,” said Ann Marie Pettit.

“Now that gas prices here are so much cheaper, in the evening, especially the weekend, even late at night during the week til 10 o’clock. There’s always cars here,” said David Calvert.

This is a gas war and Channel 2 got it on tape.

“Today [in the] morning, we went to $3.89, so he went to $3.87. So I went to $3.86 and he went to $3.79,” said nearby Shell station owner Amin Captin.

Captin’s Shell station on Buford Dam Road, just blocks from the Marathon, changed the price from $3.86 to $3.79. Not to be outdone, the Marathon station quickly lowered its price from $3.79 to $3.75. The owners have been going back and forth all day and customers are simply enjoying it.
