In an attempt to link oil prices with the Republican Party the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has launched ads using a Bush Impersonator to attack 13 Congressional Republicans.  The ad is a radio spot where president Bush leaves a message on an answering machine calling the GOP the, “Grand Oil Party”.

The Term Grand Oil Party might not be a straight forward as the DNC would like the electorate to believe. In fact data collected between the period 1988-2007 shows otherwise. Gas prices peaked several times following a period of consolidation.  There was a Democrat in the White House just 8 of those years.  Gas/Oil Prices Peaked under President HW Bush following the Gulf War,  President Clinton’s second term  under a Democratic majority in Congress oil prices rose nearly 350%), and now under the current President with a Democratic majority in both Houses of Congress. (Source: Department of Energy)  The data shows that oil prices have more to do with world events then with who is in the Oval Office. Chairman Chris Van Hollen announced today that the DCCC is launching the “Independence from Big Oil” campaign and will run radio ads against 13 House Republicans who stand with George Bush and Big Oil while America’s middle class families are being squeezed by the highest gas prices in history.  The radio ads were recorded by a comedian impersonating President Bush. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is setting its sights on unseating 13 House Republicans with a new radio ad featuring a faux President Bush.

In the ad, the voice of Mr. Bush — recorded by an impersonator — thanks the Republican members of Congress for supporting “the Big Oil Energy Agenda.” And says, in what we’ll say is a pretty rough try at the president’s folksy twang, “ ‘Preciate you voting to keep giving billions in tax breaks to the big oil companies.”

The D.C.C.C. is spending more than $100,000 to put the one-minute ads on the air during the morning commute in 13 districts this week. The committee will also use Web videos and e-mails to hammer the Republicans over the oil issue.

Of the D.C.C.C.’s decision to use a Bush impersonator in their ad, Representative Chris Van Hollen, the chairman of the organization, said: “…who better to deliver our message than someone who sounds just like him?”
