FORESTRY COMMISSION CREWS BATTLING WILDFIRES STATEWIDE

(Columbia) As of the 4:00 pm hour today, the
South Carolina Forestry Commission?s crews have
responded to approximately 91 wildfires statewide.
Most fires are minor in size and threat however
a few are several hundred acres in size.

Significant events today include a fire on Hwy. 701
in Horry Co. which has damaged or destroyed ten homes,
is 250 acres in size and at this hour is attempting to
?jump? Hwy. 701. SCFC crews are on scene in full force
with about a dozen personnel and ten tractor plows, the
primary method for fighting wildland fires.

A fire near the intersection of Harold Dr. and Powell Rd.
in Georgetown Co., SC is currently 300 acres in size with
a potential of reaching 1,000 acres.

In Spartanburg Co. where Hwy 29 merges with Hwy 85, fire
is threatening a subdivision. This wildfire is
approximately 60 acres in size. SCFC crews are
currently assisted by 50 people from surrounding
fire departments. No homes have been lost as of
this moment.

In Richland Co. in the Lake Carolina residential
area, apparently a carelessly tossed cigarette
sparked a wildland fire totaling about five acres
in size. On Kelly Mill Rd., a debris burn destroyed
a $30,000 storage building/workshop and a pickup truck.

High winds, low humidity and on-going drought conditions
have fueled this state?s wildfire hazard this weekend.
Firefighters and dispatchers with the South Carolina
Forestry Commission are working around the clock to
keep ahead of these fire outbreaks. This state is in
the midst of its wildfire season. While outdoor burning
is not currently banned, current weather conditions may
make your burn more difficult to control.

CONWAY, SC (AP) – A spokesman for the state forestry service tells WIS News 10 over 90 fires raged Sunday throughout the state, threatening dozens of homes.

Several of the fires have been contained, but many have not.

In Horry County, a 250-acre fire damaged ten mobile homes in the area and is still not contained. The spokesman says about a dozen firefighters with ten tractors are working on a fire ditch to keep anymore homes from being burned.

Fire officials evacuated the surrounding area, which runs along US Highway 701 in Conway. There is a possibility the fire could jump the highway, putting the area on the other side at risk.

Another fire is burning about 300 acres in Georgetown, but isn’t threatening any residential areas. However, that fire has a potential of burning about 700 more acres before it is contained.

In Spartanburg near the Hwy. 29-Hwy. 85 interchange, a 60-acre fire is threatening a subdivision. Forestry crews and about 50 area firefighters are working to make sure no homes are burned.

On Lake Carolina in Richland County residential area, a discarded cigarette sparked a five-acre fire. On Kelly Mill Road, another fire destroyed a $30,000 shed and a pickup truck.

Yet another fire in Horry County burned about 112 acres before it was contained, the spokesman said.

Fire rescue spokesman Todd Cartner says firefighters are on the scene, but the flames are threatening several homes north of Conway.

The National Weather Services said Sunday the eastern half of the state was under a red flag fire warning with winds gusting up to 30 mph and low humidity.

The forestry service spokesman tells WIS News 10 those high winds are a major contributing factor to the fires.

The weather service says the ground also is dry, creating dangerous wildfire conditions.

CONWAY, S.C. –Horry County fire officials have evacuated about 30 or 40 homes in an area near U.S. Highway 701 because of a large woods fire.

A port of the highway north of Conway has been closed because of low visibility and the need to move fire equipment, county fire rescue spokesman Todd Cartner said.

The first call came in just after 1 p.m. Sunday and dozens of firefighters from several coastal departments are on the scene, he said.

Cartner says officials are asking people to stay away from a larger area bounded by U.S. 701 and state Highway 319 between Conway and state Highway 22.
