PETA – Save the Whales, Lose the Blubber

It appears that Overweight people are still among the groups you are allowed to discriminate over. What if the sign had a Black woman or a lesbian on the billboard? There would be public out rage everywhere. Do over weight people have to be attacked from all angles? The usually half naked protesters for vegetarianism decide to beat up on the Obese folks in our society who struggle each day trying to lose weight. Others are happy with their shape and have no desire to look like a skeleton. These are the same folks that spend time in Rehab facilities because, Drug and Alcohol use is a disease. So they come out with a “PETA’s list of the top vegetarian-friendly rehab centers.” Have you seen a Vegan at the Beach? get some color, Eat some Meat!

A new PETA billboard campaign that was just launched in Jacksonville reminds people who are struggling to lose weight — and who want to have enough energy to chase a beach ball — that going vegetarian can be an effective way to shed those extra pounds that keep them from looking good in a bikini. The ad shows a woman whose “blubber” is spilling over the sides of her swimsuit bottom and features the tagline “Save the Whales. Lose the Blubber: Go Vegetarian. PETA.”

Anyone wishing to achieve a hot “beach bod” is reminded that studies show that vegetarians are, on average, about 10 to 20 pounds lighter than meat-eaters. The meat habit can ruin the fun in other ways too. Consuming meat and dairy products is conclusively linked to heart disease, diabetes, and several kinds of cancer — not to mention higher rates of infertility in women and impotence in men. And not only is following a healthy plant-based diet good for the environment, it is also the best thing that anyone can do to help stop the routine abuse of animals raised and killed for food. Animals on factory farms are subjected to mutilations like debeaking, tail-docking, and branding (without any painkillers) and are often slaughtered and dismembered while still conscious.

“Trying to hide your thunder thighs and balloon belly is no day at the beach,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA has a free ‘Vegetarian Starter Kit’ for people who want to lose pounds while eating as much as they like.”

Maybe a nice note to PETA.org.

Might be a good idea to find another group to beat-up on. See this article from BlogHer

Dear PETA: Please lose the blubber from your collective brains

I'm sure that scores and scores of people looked up at that and immediately gave up eating meat. Well done, PETA!

Sorry, I couldn't resist. I have to make a joke to stem the sputtering indignation that I feel over the fact that PETA has, once again, put their supposed quest for animal rights ahead of basic decency towards their fellow humans. And I say that as a slender omnivore with a vegetarian daughter, not that any of that should matter. If I thought for one second that my kid chose to go vegetarian out of some sort of weird fear of being fat, I'd be shoving prime rib down her gullet faster than you could say “all things in moderation.”

The fat phobia and degradation apparent in this campaign makes me sick. The fact that PETA then makes that into the cornerstone of their reasoning behind eschewing animal products is convoluted at best and deceptive at worst. And that this billboard is hardly the first time PETA has totally missed the mark and just made it clear that the organization has a basic disregard for humans despite their supposedly dogged devotion to honoring life makes this more than an “oops.”
