Tippett to stay in jail

PETERBOROUGH — The lawyer for accused kidnapper Stanley Tippett said outside the courthouse yesterday he doesn’t intend for the trial to be conducted outside court.
“Mr. Tippett is not going to be tried in the press, in bedrooms or barrooms,” lawyer Michael McLachlan said.
Asked whether he thought the publicity surrounding the case would affect Tippett’s right to a fair trial, McLachlan responded sarcastically. “We’re going to seek to have his trial held in Carrot River, Saskatchewan,” he said. Tippett was arrested Aug. 6 after a 12-year-old girl was allegedly abducted in Peterborough’s south end and sexually assaulted behind a school in Courtice, just east of Oshawa.
The family of the 12-year-old girl would not speak to reporters yesterday.
The girl’s grandmother said Durham Regional Police have asked family members not to speak to the media.
Police in Peterborough said Tippett remains their key suspect in the case. “It’s safe to say we’re not looking at anyone else for this,” Sgt. Dan Smith said
